A LIVING LEGACY
Like any good story, the history of Skirvin is chock-full of highs and lows, booms and busts. From its heralded opening in 1911 to its Golden Era; from pigeons in the rafters to crystal chandeliers—Skirvin has seen it all.
Skirvin History
1911
The Start of It All
The streets buzz with industry and conviviality, and W.B. Skirvin has just opened the largest hotel in the Midwest, complete with 225 guest rooms. Politicians, actresses, and investors flood into and out of Skirvin’s doors adorned in chiffon dresses and three-piece suits. The possibilities are endless.

1935

The Golden Era
There is nowhere more prominent or luxurious to stay in Oklahoma. Blocks from the bustling Union Station, Skirvin reaps the abundance of Oklahoma’s oil boom, hosting celebrities, tycoons, and socialites of all stripes. All the while, liquor is smuggled through the underground tunnels and, in the evening, gambling reigns. Hidden from plain sight, revelry ensues.
1945
A New Beginning
After W.B. Skirvin’s death, Dan James takes over the hotel and undertakes a number of modernizations. In 1958, Clara Luper stages a Civil Rights sit-in, inciting Skirvin to become the first integrated hotel in the state.

1988

Booms & Busts
Suburban sprawl and oil busts lead to tumultuous financial times in Oklahoma City at large. Skirvin feels the pressure, changing hands and ownership numerous times. Still, a small group of investors rally to save the Skirvin, and the hotel starts to look up. But in 1988, in light of the economic downturn, Skirvin closes its doors. The Pigeon Era begins.
2007
Skirvin Restored
The city and several of its most prominent figures band together to protect and preserve the Skirvin, in the hopes of returning it to its former glory. In 2007, the renovated Skirvin opens up to the public as a landmark in the heart of the city once again. During this time, Skirvin sees athletes, more celebrities, politicians, and a motley crew of regulars pass through her doors. Rumors of paranormal activity circulate, though no evidence is found.

2025

Skirvin Reimagined
As of 2025, thanks to a partnership between Ortus Hospitality and the Chickasaw Nation, Skirvin is in the process of an impeccable restoration of guest rooms, public spaces, and restaurants. A new era of Skirvin—one that honors its century-long legacy–has arrived.
